I know a lot of women, that would never talk about the books they are reading. Women that are relieved about a tool called e-reader. Because you know what? You must guess what she is reading. You can’t see the cover. You can’t judge her. This is what we do. We are judging other women by their favorite book genre.

The answers in those videos are often enough a funny version of the truth. Hiding the genre and content of the book behind simple, non-revealing words. The only thing that might give a clue is a blush. Reading a romance genre says nothing about the intelligence of a person. Yet, it gives you a clue about the person. It even gives you a clue about society these days.
There would no need to read romance if you could have what you read in real life. Wouldn’t it? The reasons why our fantasies and even expectations aren’t met are various ones. Social behavior has changed tremendously. Working hard for a relationship seems like an ancient concept. Yet, this is what you find in romance books.
Women are under a lot of pressure; men will never face. We have to be young and beautiful forever while having a title, career, kids, a beautiful home and husband, an admirable social life and hobbies. Just think about all those job descriptions behind it. However, a woman is to be expected to achieve all of it in twenty-four hours. Every single day.
It is actually not the end of the story. I once met a man, that told me, a woman’s body has to be clean and smelling like a garden in full bloom all the time. With such a statement other expectations rise. A woman has to be in shape, fit and healthy all the time. While women tend to hide their fantasies, men just put them into reality. In this case, by demanding things that are against human nature.
These thoughts are just scraping the surface, but it gives us an idea, why romance is so popular. The need to read about a man, who will obsessively or possessively (sometimes both) care about his woman, is feeding a female need. Reading sex scenes, no matter if gentle or rough ones, without having to schedule a doctor’s appointment afterwards? Intoxicating!
No one is forced to read a romance or Dark romance book. But what we can learn from them as a society that claims to be modern and equaling gender, is acceptance without judging.
